CELPIP Writing sample for task 1 & 2 for high bands

Task 1 (Email)

Your manager asked you to work at the reception desk while the receptionist is getting lunch. This involves answering telephones and helping clients who come in. However, you are unable to help out because you have other work.

Write an email to your manager in about 150-200 words. Your email should do the following things:

-Apologize.
-Explain why you don’t have time to help out.
-Suggest a way to solve the problem.

Dear Sir,

I am Emma Gibson and my Employee ID is YRHK6874. I am writing to you regarding the reception desk work assigned to me for the duration while the receptionist gets lunch. I regret to inform that I will not be able to carry out the duties since it overlaps with my work which is deadline oriented .

My main work area pertains to working on Agendas and Minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors. These meetings are a monthly affair and Agenda items have to be collected from various departments. Furthermore, draft Minutes of the previous meeting also need to be finalized carefully incorporating comments from all Board members. Alongside, comparative charts have to be prepared depicting performance of each department. The whole process comprises of accumulating a large amount of data.

Attending to the other work will stall all my project and hinder my focus causing unnecessary delays in my schedule.

In my view, if the work is handed over to the Customer Service department, it will be more suitably handled. Both the areas are similar and can be managed simultaneously.

I look forward to your kind co-operation in the matter.

Yours sincerely,

Emma Gibson

Task 2 (Survey) –

You are taking an English writing class at a local college, and your instructor is surveying your opinion about the final exam. Currently, half of the course grade is based on a three-hour final exam written in class. However, your instructor is considering allowing students to submit a five-page report instead, which they would write at home.

Choose the option that you prefer. Why do you prefer your choice? Explain the reasons for your choice. Write about 150-200 words.

Option A: I would prefer to write a three-hour final exam in class.
Option B: I would prefer to write a five-page report at home.

I prefer to write a five-page report instead of three-hour exam for final exam. My choice stems mainly from two reasons.

At the outset, a three-hour exam is too long a duration to be glued to a chair. Often fatigue creeps in and students lose focus. This may lead to poor results jeopardizing their future.

Furthermore, a student may be good throughout the year. He may have studied well and done all his work punctually but still might not fare well in the final exam due to stress and anxiety. The judgement of his performance due to factors outside his control may prove to be too harsh for him and detrimental for his career. For example, a good student may not do well during final exam due to unnecessary performance pressure during the three-hour period.

Conversely, if the assessment is done based on a report done in the comfort of one’s home instead, it will provide the examiner a better insight into the pupil’s capabilities and understanding of the subject. It will be a comprehensive, well thought-out work which will prove to be a better guide about his grasp of the matter.

Hence, in my opinion, a five-page report at home is a way better to judge a student than a three-hour exam.
