Task 1 ( Informal Letter)
Question: Your friend is planning to visit your town for a few days. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:
•Suggest some places they could visit
•Recommend some activities
•Offer to spend some time with them
Dear Sarah,
It was wonderful to hear that you are planning to visit my town next month. I’m really looking forward to seeing you, and I am sure we will have a fantastic time together. Since you will only be here for a few days, I thought I should suggest some places and activities that you might enjoy.
First and foremost, I would highly recommend visiting the city center, where you can explore some charming cafés, local shops and historical buildings. If the weather is pleasant, you could also take a walk along the waterfront and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Another place worth visiting is the local art gallery, which has a fascinating collection of contemporary and traditional artwork.
As for activities, why don’t we go hiking one afternoon? There is a beautiful trail just outside the town, and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We could also try one of the restaurants, I told you about last time. I am sure you will love the local food.
Most importantly, I would be delighted to spend as much time with you as possible while you are here. If you can let me know your schedule in advance, I would arrange my plans accordingly. In fact, I could even pick you up from the station when you arrive.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see you! Let me know your exact arrival time when you get a chance.
Best wishes,
Emily
Question: In many cities, traffic congestion is becoming increasingly serious. What are the main problems caused by traffic congestion? What solutions can you suggest?
Traffic congestion has become a major concern in many cities around the world. As the number of private vehicles continues to rise, roads are becoming increasingly overcrowded, resulting in a range of environmental, economic and social problems. Nevertheless, there are several effective measures that governments and individuals can take to address this issue.
One of the most significant problems, associated with traffic congestion is the amount of time people waste commuting. Long delays can lead to increased stress and reduced productivity, particularly for those who travel to work every day. Furthermore, a large number of vehicles on the road contributes considerably to air pollution. Exhaust fumes contain harmful substances that can negatively affect people’s health and worsen existing respiratory problems. Another serious consequence is that emergency services, such as ambulances and fire engines, may struggle to reach their destinations quickly, potentially putting many lives at risk.
There are, however, several ways to tackle this problem. First and foremost, governments should invest more heavily in reliable and affordable public transportation. If buses and trains were frequent, comfortable and reasonably priced, more people would be encouraged to leave their cars at home. In addition, authorities could introduce extra charges for cars during peak congestion times in the busiest areas . This would discourage unnecessary car journeys as well as generate revenue that could be invested in improving public transport and road infrastructure.
Individuals also have an important role to play. For instance, people could carpool with colleagues, cycle to work or use public transportation whenever possible. Employers could further contribute by allowing staff to work remotely for some part of the week, thereby reducing the number of daily commuters on the roads
In conclusion, traffic congestion causes serious problems, including wasted time, air pollution and difficulties for emergency services. However, a combination of better public transportation, congestion charges, alternative forms of travel and flexible working arrangements could significantly reduce the problem. With coordination between businesses and individuals, cities could become cleaner, safer and considerably operate more efficiently.
