CELPIP Writing sample for Email & Survey for 10-12 Bands

EMAIL –

You recently visited a friend’s apartment. You noticed that your friend’s building has a shared bookcase in the lobby where people can leave and take books. You would like to suggest having a similar bookcase in your apartment building.
Write an email to your building manager. Your email should do the following things:
– Describe how the shared bookcase would work
– Explain why you would like to have a shared bookcase
– Propose what you can do to start this project

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am Diana Lee, a resident of Apartment 404 at Tulip Apartments. When I recently visited a friend’s apartment at Bredford, I chanced upon an exceptional concept of shared community resource – a shared bookcase. It clearly blew me away.
This comprises of books and novels donated by the building residents and kept in a book-shelf in the lobby area of the building. The residents can borrow the books of their choice for reading and return them back for others to enjoy.
This would be a great chance for fostering sense of belonging in the community as donating for a common cause always generates a feeling of comradeship and togetherness. Furthermore, in today’s fast paced world, this will encourage the habit of reading books amongst everyone, which is quickly being lost to the digital devices. To illustrate, youngsters will generate the love of paper books once they realize their easy availability right at their doorsteps.
To initiate the project, I offer to donate my old book shelf and a few treasured novels. Once kept in the lobby, others will also feel inspired to share their books.
I look forward to your positive response on the matter. Afterall, we all know – Sharing is Caring.
Regards,
Diana

SURVEY –

The local community college is asking students what general interest courses they would like offered at the college. The college wants to offer either a basic cooking course or an introductory piano course. You have been asked to respond to an opinion survey.
Choose the option that you prefer. Why do you prefer your choice? Explain the reasons for your choice. Write about 150–200 words.
Option A: I would prefer to take a basic cooking course.

Option B: I would prefer to take an introductory piano course.

In my opinion, even though Option A looks interesting, I would choose Option B.
My choice stems from the fact that the piano course will be a perfect chance to learn a completely a new talent. We will learn something different, which is not chanced upon in our routine lives. Being able to maneuver the keys of a piano would be an interesting and inspiring journey teaching us the finer nuances of music. It will also provide us with an outlet to de-stress as piano music is known for evoking soothing emotions.
In addition, since this will be a specialized activity, it will add a feather to our caps and enhance our confidence. For instance, we can play during Christmas at the chapel and amaze and enthrall everyone. Afterall, everyone knows how to cook, but how many people know how to play the piano!! Wouldn’t it garner accolades for us when we display our extra-ordinary skills to family or to public ?
On the other end of the scale, cooking is a skill that everyone learns. We help our families cook meals daily. But not all of us chance upon learning music which is also an essential part of our lives.
Hence, I whole-heartedly favour the introductory piano lessons since it will be a chance to learn something new.
