TASK 1 –
You live across from an elementary school where a construction team is working outside. You notice that the construction site does not have a safety fence around it and that it is too noisy during class. You are worried about children getting hurt after school or having difficulty learning in class.
Write an email to the construction company. Your email should do the following things:
- Describe what you have seen
- Explain why you are worried
- Suggest how they could work more safely
Dear Mr. Jones,
My name is Elisa and I live across the street from Cloverdale Elementary School, King George Road. Your construction team is working right outside the school, repairing the structure adjacent to it. I wish to draw your kind attention to my observation regarding the inadequate safety measures at the site.
To elaborate, there is no safety fence at the site. I fear that the school children may wander into the area either unknowingly or out of curiosity, thus putting their health and safety at risk. I request that the construction area must be surrounded by a strong fence. Additionally, a dedicated person should guard the area to ensure that children do not loiter there.
Another issue is the noise in the vicinity created by construction activities, which interferes with students’ learning and concentration. I suggest that workers refrain from shouting instructions and restrict the use of noisy machinery to after-school hours.
I hope you will consider my suggestions. Precaution is better than cure. Should you need to discuss further, my phone number is 234-567-8900.
I look forward to your positive response.
Regards,
Elisa
TASK 2 –
The city council is considering two empty sites as possible places to build a new airport. All residents are being asked to complete an opinion survey. One site is in the downtown area and the other is 10 km away from the city centre.
Choose the option that you prefer. Why do you prefer your choice? Explain the reasons for your
choice. Write about 150-200 words.
Option A: I think the airport should be built in the downtown area.
Option B: I think the airport should be built far from the downtown area.
Though both options have advantages, in my opinion Option B will prove more sustainable in the long term.
My point of view stems primarily from the current traffic situation in our city. Since most businesses are based in downtown, the roads are congested during rush hours. Being a commercial hub, downtown has constant traffic flow throughout the day. As a result, travel time has increased and traffic moves very slowly. If an airport is built there, the infrastructure will not be able to handle the additional traffic, causing inconvenience to residents and travelers alike.
Another concern is the presence of birds in the downtown area due to nearby water sources and food availability. This can pose a serious hazard to aircraft.
Although building the airport downtown may boost business, the inconvenience and safety risks outweigh the benefits. A residential and commercial area would suffer from increased noise and congestion.
Thus, I believe that Option B is not only practical but also a more future-oriented solution.
